We have listed 7 positive developments from 2022 for you.
Dutch media outlet NOS reported today that due to the overwhelming amount of negative news, more people decided to shut off from it. Especially among the younger generation until 35 years old, people decide not to follow the news anymore, because it is inducing stress and negative emotions. Experts say negative news is not bad per se, but the balance is off.
This was exactly the reason that Mavin Magazine was founded, to offer a contribution in the balancing of positive and negative news in the media landscape, in which the positive side of developments is traditionally underrepresented by the media. It is important to absorb both and equally as important to retrieve your news from several different media outlets in order to come to a more accurate comprehension of the world.
Despite 2022 having the image of a year of just misery, there were also positive developments, such as:
1.
Multilateral agreements signed
Agreements on climate change in Egypt and biodiversity in Montreal were signed that are an important step forward in fighting both these problems.
2.
Breakthrough in nuclear fusion energy
Scientists successfully sparked a fusion reaction that released more energy than went into it, marking an important step towards creating a new sustainable form of energy that releases virtually no carbon dioxide.
3.
Short Haul flights regulations
France is banning domestic flights where there’s a train alternative that takes less than 2.5 hours.
4.
Aviation regulation
From January 2023, the Netherlands increased the tax price on flight tickets within the EU. Consumers are expected to pay a higher price for these flights, stemming from, among other reasons, that airlines will have to pay more for their CO2 emissions.
5.
Sustainable airplanes
There are more experiments and developments in low-carbon airplanes and sustainable aviation fuel. Rolls Royce and EasyJet successfully tested an aero engine running on hydrogen. Rolls Royce will receive more than €700 million funding for sustainable aviation projects from the European Union's Clean Aviation program.
6.
EU 100 percent CO2 reduction target for new vehicles by 2035
The EU proposal to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035 was approved as part of the new European climate package.
7.
Fighting plastic pollution
75 nations agreed on a “historic” resolution to end plastic pollution, with extra focus on marine plastic pollution, with the plan to forge an international legally binding agreement by 2024.
